What is Melanoma?
Although melanoma is one of the least common forms of skin cancer, it is the most serious because the cancer can spread to other parts of your body. You should always check your face and body for any unusual moles or freckles because early detection of melanoma leads to improved outcomes.
PROTECTING, DETECTING & TREATING
The primary cause for melanoma skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, or sunlight, which we are all exposed to every day. More than 500,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year, and they span the range of races, cultures, and national origin. Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer, but can be very successfully treated when caught early. MELANOMA DETECTION
A common rule of thumb to remember to help you detect early signs of melanoma known as the “ABCDE” method:
- Asymmetry
- Border: the edges are irregular
- Color: uneven tone
- Diameter: an increase in size
- Evolving: dramatic changes
Melanomas can have black or blue-black centers, and are abnormal or unsightly in appearance. Often resembling a mole, they can change in size, shape, color, or even feel. Melanoma can be found on any part of the body but 80 percent appear on the face, head or neck area, which can allow the cancer to spread quickly to vital organs and structures. Melanoma that has metastasized is much more serious and has lower cure rates.
Treatment
Melanoma is most commonly treated by excising the lesion and surrounding tissue. Given the nature of these surgeries, and the cosmetic concerns of the most commonly affected areas (neck, face, scalp), it is important to choose a surgeon with expertise in surgical excision, and reconstructive and cosmetic closures.
