Sculptra®

Guide to Sculptra®

While it's impossible to deny that aging is a natural part of the human aging process, we ultimately live in a youth-based society where people are judged in many ways according to their looks and age-related changes in our skin and facial area, particularly in women, can be extremely upsetting to the point of causing real psychological trauma.

During the past few decades, the cosmetic surgery and facial rejuvenation industry has risen to the challenge, developing a wide variety of both surgical and non-invasive procedures designed to rejuvenate the skin and reduce the signs of aging.

One of these solutions is dermal fillers, also known as a 'liquid facelift', which are substances that are injected into wrinkles and creases in the skin in order to add volume beneath the surface and thus bolster sagging and other age-related imperfections.

Dermal fillers are safe and gentle and are administered quickly and easily by cosmetic surgeons; they are minimally invasive and therefore require little to no down time and they often keep the skin supple and wrinkle-free for anywhere from one year to over a decade.

One of these outstanding dermal fillers is Sculptra®, an injectable substance derived from poly-L-lactic acid, which fills out the face over time in order to provide subtle, long-term results that combat aging on a permanent basis.

How Sculptra® Reduces the Effects of Aging
Sculptra® is designed to work slowly on the skin over a period of time and often requires up to three treatments over a few months in order for results to be seen clearly; once injected, Sculptra® goes to work in the deep dermis layer of the skin in order to stimulate collagen formation and thereby restore a full look to aging skin that has become less defined over time.

As a biodegradable and a biocompatible substance, Sculptra® is absorbed naturally into the body little by little as it stimulates collagen, therefore providing a gentle and long-lasting facial rejuvenation solution; Sculptra® is highly recommended for slight to deeper naso-labial folds as well as contouring issues and a variety of other wrinkles in the face, although Sculptra® is not for use in the lips.

Types of Facial Injectable
There are three different types of substances used for facial injections; toxins such as Botox, which work by temporarily disabling the underlying muscles, conventional fillers which are generally liquid and/or gel substances that fill in the area under the skin, and collagen stimulators which work by stimulating the underlying structure of the skin. Sculptra® is a collagen stimulator that contains no bacterial, human or animal compounds and that is naturally absorbed by the body; the substance is so natural in fact that no pre-treatment allergy test is required as with most other dermal fillers.

Risks and Special Considerations
Sculptra® has been used around the world since 1999 and as it is a non-toxic, natural material, side effects are very rare and seldom serious; however on occasion side effects will occur and they are normally issues such as pain, redness or bruising at the injection site, slight swelling and/or small bumps under the skin in the treated area.

Your surgeon will be sure to discuss any concerns around risks and side effects before treatment in order to ensure that all precautions are taken.
