What is a chemical peel?
A skin chemical peel is an exfoliation method that can improve the appearance of skin on the face, neck and the backs of hands. The chemical peel is applied to the skin and causes the top layers of skin to blister and peel off. This process encourages the skin to have a more youthful appearance.
Types of chemical peel
Different types of chemical peel are used for different skin complaints. Each type of skin peel is available in different strengths. It is commonly referred to as salicylic acid and is a common ingredient in acne skin treatments. In higher concentrations, BHA is used as a skin peel to slough off dead skin cells that can build up, contributing to skin complaints such as acne, blackheads, whiteheads and uneven skin.
- Trichloroacetic acid chemical peel - Trichloroacetic acid [TCA] is a bioactive substance that stimulates the production of large molecules such as collagen. TCA is used to resurface the texture of the skin, particularly in anti-aging skin treatments that target wrinkles, sun damage and age spots. It is a medium depth peel, with a longer recovery time than other peels.
- Enerpeel - Enerpeel technology is an effective new chemical peel delivery method, penetrating deeper without traumatizing superficial skin layers. Enerpeel acids hold onto their active molecules until they reach the right skin depth, releasing them into the effective area. This targeted chemical peel delivery system reduces skin trauma, meaning less redness and skin flaking. Enerpeel can be used on a variety of skin issues such as aging skin, acne, uneven skin pigmentation and scarring.

First the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that will remove excess oils, whilst protecting the hair and skin. Depending on your skin type and condition, the chemical peel solution can be applied to the entire face or specific regions. These include the crow’s feet area or near the nose. The chemical peel is applied with a sponge or cotton pad. The dermatologist carefully observes the skin and, based on the changes, determines how long the solution should stay on.

Care after chemical peel

Avoid excessive skin irritants during the after chemical peel phase, avoid over washing, and use skin care products especially for sensitized skin.
Skin that is healing has reduced protection from the damaging effects of the sun. After a chemical peel, your skin is at higher risk of sun damage and requires additional protection for up to fourteen days following treatment. Always include a sensitive, high SPF sunscreen in your skin care routine, and cover up in, or try to avoid the sun.
After chemical peel treatments, as the skin has been sloughed off and sensitized, it is at risk of dehydration. Adequate hydration provides skin cells with the water they need for normal cell metabolism. In conjunction with a skin care regime, drink plenty of water to maintain skin hydration to assist with healing.
